Glycomet is part of a class of medications known as biguanides. It helps reduce elevated blood glucose levels (hyperglycaemia) by enabling your body to utilize the insulin made by your pancreas more effectively.

Metformin, an antihyperglycemic drug, enhances glucose tolerance in individuals with type 2 diabetes by lowering both fasting and post-meal plasma glucose levels. Its mechanisms of action are distinct from those of other classes of oral antihyperglycemic medications. Metformin decreases the production of glucose in the liver, reduces glucose absorption in the intestines, and enhances insulin sensitivity by increasing the uptake and utilization of glucose in peripheral tissues.

In contrast to sulfonylureas, Glycomet does not lead to hypoglycemia in patients with type 2 diabetes or in individuals without diabetes, and it does not induce hyperinsulinemia. With Glycomet treatment, insulin secretion remains stable, while fasting insulin levels and overall plasma insulin response throughout the day may actually decline.

Glycomet is utilized to manage blood glucose levels (the amount of sugar in the blood) for those with diabetes mellitus. It can be employed in: type 1 diabetes, also referred to as insulin-dependent diabetes or juvenile-onset diabetes, when insulin alone fails to adequately control blood glucose levels; and type 2 diabetes, commonly known as non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) or maturity-onset diabetes. It is particularly beneficial for individuals who are overweight when dietary changes and exercise do not sufficiently reduce high blood glucose levels (hyperglycaemia).

Glycomet may be prescribed alone or alongside other medications for diabetes management. Its use is not advised for children, except for those with insulin-resistant diabetes being treated in a hospital setting.
